Today's crossword
Jul 15, 2022
Today's crossword was cute! Once again, I had fun with the Friday puzzle while Thursday's (yesterday) was a total joyless slog.
Clues that delighted:
- 12A Relatively new addition to Thanksgiving?: INLAW
- 22A Funny business: COMEDY
- 23A They're put in quotes: PRICES
- 27A Stick in one's mouth: TOOTHPICK
- 33A Drink with an onomatopoeic name: SLURPEE (just made me think of that sluuuuurrrrppppp sound you get when the drink is running out)
- 36A Their customers lie for them: MASSEUSES
- 51A Warped fabric, it's said: SPACETIME
- 5D Neck lines: FRETS
- 23D English four-wheeler: PRAM
- 42D Fencing needs: POSTS (really misdirects everyone who does the crossword often, since I immediately plopped in EPEES feeling all confident)
- 46D Is short: OWES
Answers that delighted:
- 8D YOUR OTHER RIGHT: "No, the opposite" (of course, since it's a marquee answer! if the marquee answer doesn't delight, there's something wrong... which also sadly happens in this puzzle with the other marquee answer)
- 10A MOOED: Responded to a cattle call (the word MOO is just so whimsical)
- 37A SLUICE: Streaming channel? (just like with SLURPEE, there's just something so vivid and satisfyingly wet-sounding with this word)
- 39D ECLAIRS: Desserts once known as petites duchesses (I like learning these little factoids from the puzzle)
- 43D UNPIN: Remove from the top of one's profile, as a tweet (seemed a little modern knowledge to me, in a good way... either that, or I'm truly old)
And finally, SLEW (50D: Host) crossing with SLAW (58A: Side dish that's uncooked) was quite CUTE (22D: Aww-inspiring).
