Today's crossword
Jun 3, 2022
There are enough crossword blogs without needing another! I'm not becoming another crossword blog! I'm just very excited and happy about today's crossword!
A text I sent yesterday about Thursday's groan-worthy theme:
monday - wednesday are easy but usually no sing
thursday is TERRIBLE
friday is the best. saturday is usually good too but a touch too hard
sunday is a big long slog and usually for some nonsense too
I am once again proven right. Yesterday's puzzle was a plodding chore with no payoff and today's was anything but.
Clues that delighted:
- 18A Giving chocolate to the dog, e.g.: NONO
- 20A Proceed during rush hour, say: CREEP
- 21A It's down in France: DUVET
- 28A Give and take: BARTER
- 39A Huckersters have them: SPIELS
- 43A The average American spends over four hours a day on it: PHONE (something we've got a lot to say about over here in Neocities, it seems)
- 49A Clip: RATE
- 52A It's not good: EVIL
- 53A Buildings with many wings: BIRDHOUSES
- 3D Tiny inheritance: GENE
- 6D Looks like a jerk: OGLE
- 30D Reason some kids won't go to class: FIELD TRIP
- 32D It may be part of a suit: TORT
- 41D Take a plane to: SHAVE
- 48D Private dining room: MESS
Most of these clues had answers that were just a little unexpected, exactly what I like about good Friday clues. It means that you get to feel smart when you know one immediately, or else pleased when you finally figure one out. Like you actually! solved a puzzle!
Answers that delighted:
- 17A BANKROLLED: Supplied with dough, say
- 30A FANCY THAT: "Well, who'da thunk it!"
- 50A CRUNCH TIME: Period before a big deadline
- 10D TENURE TRACK: Path at a university
- 11D I'M OVER HERE: Comment made while waving in a crowd
- 22D SOLAR PANELS: They work using photovoltaic cells (of personal significance)
- 27D NOVA SCOTIA: Part of Canada named for part of Europe
They're so fresh, compared to the boring or actively joyless junk that commonly fills the crossword.
Hoping we get a puzzle as fun tomorrow!
